Paris - The City of Romance

Many refer to Paris as the city of romance. Infact it is a very popular destination among honeymooners. Maybe its so because it is the home of the Eiffel Tower. I have heard many couples express their deepest love to each other atop the tower. The Eiffel is wonderful, no doubt, towering above most of Paris. And I am guessing the only place in Paris from where you don't see it is when you are on the tower itself. But there are so many other things that add to the romance of the place that the Eiffel tower in the end seems just a small part of what Paris is about.

Take for example, the river Siene that criss-crosses the city. Most of old Paris is situated around this river. There are numerous small foot and road bridges that take you across the river, and numerous embankments around the river where Sunit and I really enjoyed walking. Quiet walks along a river in the middle of a city - now that is something one doesn't get to do often.

Also adding to the charm of this city are the brick or cobbled streets and small little patisseries that one finds in each corner. Serving baguettes of all sizes and french expresso and cafe au lait, these patisseries form the heart of the city. The most common sight one comes across, in the mornings, is people walking about hastily with a baguette in their hands.

Paris is also the art capital. And art is found not just in the museums and exhibition halls. It is found on the streets in the form of local artists selling their paintings and prints, and street side shops selling the same. Sunit had to hold my hand because the moment I saw one of these I wanted to spend all my time looking at their stuff and often money too. Although to clarify I must add, most of these street side shops sold prints at very reasonable rates compared to what one found in the museums.

We loved our stay in Paris. More so because we visited Paris right after getting married. Walking the streets, eating at the local patisseries, idling by Siene and looking up at the Eiffel tower, we had the most wonderful time.

And last but not the least, I think our visit was all the more special and comfortable because of this really cozy little family run hotel "Hotel Des Grandes Ecoles". Cozy rooms lined with wall papers that depicted stories, and with a small garden in the courtyard with many splendored blooms - this was the most comfortable place in the heart of the city and very reasonable compared to most of the high priced hotels around. 2 thumbs up for this place.

Pooja, good to see a new post from you. I wish I would make it one day to Paris. So many places and so little time and if the location is outside India, so little money too I have :)

It does cost relatively more to visit any place outside India than within. For us, we made the trip to Paris on our way back from India and since we were travelling Air France, we just had to pay a little more than our India flights to get a stop over in Paris.

Next time you travel to some conference or something outside India, maybe you can try something like this :-)
