The Kauai Hindu Monastery

July 4th, 2005

Right before we left for Kauai, I happened to run into Shaker who told me to check out the Kauai Hindu Monastery.

We went, more out of curiosity than interest - A Hindu monastery in the middle of nowhere. Our trip, though, was fully worth the effort. Set in some very lush greens, about 3 miles from the wettest spot on Earth, the tour of the monastery and its grounds was one of the highlights of our trip and here are some pictures from the same.

For more information on the monastery itself and "Hinduism Today" - the magazine published by the monks at this monastery you can visit:

Hey Guys,

How are you doing. Great pictures. Specially the Lord Ganesh in the middle of no where is cool. How did you managed to find Ganeshji in US jungles ???

Well all the snaps are now part of my desktop screen saver. Start charging a cent or two for these pictures and I am pretty sure you will mint money with these post cards :)

Love

That is true...I always heard of such places being referred to as "Ashram" back in India. I am guessing it might also have to do with the fact that Gurudeva himself spent a lot of time outside India/Sri Lanka and "monastery" is the term more commonly used here in US.

Thanks for visiting.

I missed this place when we visited Kauai a couple of years ago, and now I am seeing mention of it everywhere! Searched for vegetarian restaurants on the Web, but I guess we didn't search for a Hindu temple/ashram.

Oh well, another excuse to plan a visit to the garden isle.
